REPORT OF THE 3rd STAGE
ROUTE: JOLFA-KALAIBAR
DISTANCE: 185 km.
The second longest stage of Iran-Azerbaijan Cycling Tour started at 9:00 local time from the border city Jolfa, to be concluded in Kalaibar some 186 km to the east. The mild autumn weather and the prospect of a tough competition promised a heated competition for the teams to stand first on the third Day.
The route is the spectacular banks of the river Araxes which flows west to east to the Caspian Sea, separating Iran from the Republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan in the north. The route is widely known for the sporadic recreational riders going on multiday adventures. The ups and downs of the long border road and the wild pomegranate trees on the road-side is always an attraction for the tourists and the riders. The long road from Jolfa is extended toward the east, passing through the small and large villages “Marazad, Siyah-Rood, Noordooz, Noche-Mehr, Kordasht, Khodafarin, Tatar, Too-Ali, Ashighlu and Jananlu” which comprises 156 km of the road to Aslandooz. The River Araxes on the left is always a beautiful natural scene to enjoy watching.
On the third Day of the Tour, 59 cyclists started the race. The peloton moved swiftly toward the first SPRINT LINE at kilometer 90 from the start, where the Malaysian cyclist MAZUKI Nur Amirull Fakhruddin (106, from TSG-TERENGGANU POLYGON CYCLING TEAM) smiled as the first sprinter of the Day. Then, there was a 3-cyclist-breakaway from the peloton. Just before Jananlu (156 km) the space between the heading group and the peloton disappeared and the peloton started the last 30 kilometers on a mild upward slope to Kalaibar. 25 kilometers to the Finish line, there was another six-cyclist breakaway, which lasted to the end of the race. The road, stretched between the mountains with dispersed colorful autumn bushes and mountain trees, beautifully lay over a valley with small patches of blueberry trees. The last steep slope of the route to the Finish Line dispersed the six leading cyclists and the following results were gained for the Third Day:
